Interlude: Book Reviews

Some good books I've read recently (in the past 2 & 1/2 weeks--we had a lot of down time!):

Gweilo by Martin Booth
True story, mostly (I imagine some of it is embellished quite a bit) about growing up in Hong Kong. He somehow manages to make friends with Triads, British generals, and coolies.

Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan
I picked this one up at the airport in HK on our way out on a whim, and it was kind of frightening how appropriate this book was on our little vacation. Witty & thoughtful, as well as a good intro to Burma.

White Teeth by Zadie Smith
Not what I expected at all, but a good read nonetheless. I've been reading a lot of books about migrants, uprooted families, and traveling, so this one fit in quite nicely with that theme.

A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo
I bought this yesterday at PageOne and finished it within a few hours, despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that it's written in Chinglish.

I'm in the middle of Letters from Burma by Aung San Suu Kyi at the moment. It's a collection of articles she wrote for the Japanese press in the nineties, introducing Burmese culture(s) and the country's political situation to the outside world. I think I will read Perfect Hostage after I finish this one.
